Home Safety & Security
Spring break is almost here (starting April 7!), and whether you're planning a beach getaway, a mountain escape, or just a few days of relaxation, one thing you shouldn't forget is your home's safety and your own personal safety while you're gone.
Busy travel seasons can create the perfect opportunity for break-ins, package theft, or damage from unexpected home issues. Plus, with more people on the roads and in popular destinations, accidents and injuries tend to spike. So before you pack your bags and head out the door, here are a few smart tips to keep both your home and your family safe while you enjoy your time away.
Install a smart security system with cameras, motion sensors, and alarms.
Use smart doorbells like Ring or Google Nest to monitor visitors or deliveries.
Set up mobile alerts so you’re instantly notified of any suspicious activity.
Use timers on lights (indoor and outdoor) to create the illusion that someone’s home.
Ask a trusted friend or neighbor to collect your mail and packages, or place a hold with USPS.
Leave a car in the driveway or arrange for someone to park there occasionally.
Avoid posting travel details or vacation countdowns on social media before or during your trip.
Share vacation photos after you return.
Consider adjusting your privacy settings to limit who sees your updates.
Unplug unnecessary electronics to prevent electrical issues.
Set your thermostat to an energy-efficient temperature, but not too low in case of freezing temps.
Check for leaks, running toilets, or dripping faucets before leaving.
If you're heading out on a road trip or flying to a destination, don’t overlook personal safety while traveling:
Map out your route in advance and use apps to monitor traffic or construction zones.
Share your travel itinerary with a trusted friend or family member.
Inspect tires, brakes, lights, and fluid levels before hitting the road.
Make sure your spare tire and emergency kit are ready to go.
Spring break hotspots can get crowded and chaotic—stay alert, especially around unfamiliar areas.
If you're driving long distances, take breaks to avoid drowsy driving.
If you're involved in a crash, document everything with photos and notes.
Exchange contact and insurance info with the other party.
Seek legal or insurance guidance promptly to protect your rights.
Taking a few extra precautions before you leave can go a long way toward protecting your home and ensuring your trip goes smoothly. Whether you're gone for a few days or a full week, knowing you’re prepared allows you to fully enjoy your time away.
